the ecclesia

With due respect to people for whom the word church is not consciously loaded with the DNA of empire, and despite having been something of a prolific church planter in my time, I have decided not to use the word church to designate God’s people any longer. ecclesia is now my preferred word for reasons I will discuss as the days go by.

  1. I am so looking forward to reading this… when you mentioned this recently I decided that in December I would try to blog a little on ‘please, let’s drop the word church’. Glad you are going first – cos I only stole the idea from you anyway!!!

  2. The Christadelphians would get you anyway. All of their congregations have always been known as ecclesias and their Sunday gatherings simply as “The Meeting.”

This made for somewhat perplexing conversations with my peers as a child, who knew I was really going to church because we were all dressed up smart and carrying Bibles 😉
