Launching out into deep time!

We have had our good friend and UCL geologist Dave Dobson staying here. He was explaining over dinner and again at breakfast the way that time is understood mathematically as having four dimensions and that each runs at right angles so that they are not chronologically dependent on the other, or something like that. I’ve asked him to put this into a sentence and source it so that I can express it intelligibly to the lay person [particularly me]! This all has highly practical implications as I’m trying to break my dependence on chronological time to achieve my thesis deadlines. This practical use of time is shot through with imperial obligation and tends to act against revelation and creativity. Far from getting the work done it tends to block it, log jam it and lock it up! Sue suggests that we need to get into deep time. This is akin to the idea of quality time. It reminds me of Jesus’ advice to his disciples to launch out into the deep  “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch” (Lk 5:4). This is a word for now I think. It’s time for us repositioned types to launch out into deep time with full expectation of a great catch of revelatory and creative imaginations that will translate into a new way of political being and good news for the poor and the planet.
